Milling
Milling machines perform the tapering, profiling and excavation of asphalt surfaces. Large milling machines belt-feed materials directly into dump trucks, while skid-steer mounted attachments are used for the corners and other hard-to-get areas.
Even a simple overlay requires graduated tapering at adjacent structures such as drains, handicapped ramps, dumpster pads and public roadways. Profiling can be done to remove a thin layer of asphalt , which provides truer grades for proper surface drainage.
When there are issues of surface integrity or curb reveal involved, it is often best to remove the same thickness of material that you plan to put back, which maintains all the existing elevations. Mills can also be used to dig deeper; to replace the entire asphalt profile, or even the entire pavement profile, when you plan to start over from new stone on up.
